What is an obedient dog?

The basis for all obedience is training to achieve this goal of livability. A dog that does what it is told and knows its role in society will generally be a happier and more useful pet.

As an extension of this basic social role, man has devised ways of using dogs to serve his needs. In its most ritual form we have obedience routines, field trials and dog shows, all of which require the dog to master certain techniques of learning and to demonstrate them in competition. Without the competition they are just as valid. It is essential for a dog's well being, and for his participation in society, that he respond to the basic commands of "Heel", "Sit", "Stay", "Down", and "Come".

A trained dog is a good citizen.
