As JATO, I bred Basenjis for more than 25 years, producing over 50 mostly breeder/owner handled champions. I was an ongoing student of the hound breeds, and began judging in 1987 at the request of several breeder friends. When my husband's health required, I moved to Chinese Cresteds, where I finished a few. Following my husband's death in 2004, my sister, Penny Inan, and I moved to Palmdale with the "last" basenji, her Istanbul (Turkey) street dog, and four Chinese Cresteds. It was several years before we got back into dog shows, and made the decision that a shaved dog was not truly a hairless dog. We now show and live with Xoloitzcuintlis, two hairless toy girls, one almost a Grand Champion and an almost Champion mini coated girl. We still love our little veteran Cresteds, but our energies are now devoted to the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America, and the Gold Coast Xoloitzcuintli Club. I also continue to study the hound breeds, where I hope to be approved for the group eventually. I study each breed in great depth, and am in no hurry. I want to get it right, not fast.
