It seems only yesterday theat Barbara, my wife, and I were introduced to our first dog. In the summer of 1971, while we were sailing on Long Island Sound, we started to think about having a companion that could accompany us on our summer cruises. We read an article by Walter Fletcher, in the New York Times, about a Portuguese Water Dog, a dog used by the fishermen in Portugal. Thus started our dog career. We soon added Kerry Blue Terriers.
Soon after we established Spindrift Kennels. This kennel produced the first two American bred Portuguese Water Dog AKC Champions, the first two UD's, CDX's and CD's in the breed and produced the foundation stock of many Portuguese Water Dog kennels in the United States. In Kerry Blue's Spindrift Kennels produced two generations of Champion - UD Kerry's. We also have put other Championships and Obedience titles on Portuguese Water Dogs and Kerry Blues and are still competing today in obedience. I am still a member and have served various officers of The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, The Empire Kerry Blue Terrier Club, The Obedience Stewards Club, and The Suffolk Obedience Training Club.
I was approved as an American Kennel Club Obedience Judge in February, 1988. I was honored to be the first approved Portuguese Water Dog Water Trial Judge in 1991 and worked on the committee that set the rules and regulations for Portuguese Water Trials. I was honored to have judged the water trial at the First National Specialty held in 1992
