As a child growing up, Patricia Jean Hillyard dreamed of being professionally involved with dogs. When their young family moved to Cupertino, CA in 1962 near the kennel of Mr. & Mrs. Lyle and Phydelma Gillette ("Rancho Gabriel" Kennels) her dreams started to unfold. This was the home of Borzoi, Salukis and Beagles with numerous Champions.
She was introduced to Open Field Coursing, Lure Coursing and Obedience. In these areas Mrs. Hillyard put Championships on her dogs and she also judged these events. "I believe I was the first to put a Coursing title and a CDX on a Borzoi."
She was a professional handler for about 15 years and belonged to the PHA. During this time she started a small kennel, "Tiber Ridge" Kennels, that had Borzoi, Salukis and Bearded Collies. The number of dogs they kept was small because of the time spent on the road, but they did produce about 20 Champions.
When they moved to Placerville, CA, Mrs. Hillyard continued teaching conformation and obedience classes for the Sacramento Recreation Department. The Hangtown Kennel Club was started in their home and she taught conformation and obedience classes for Hangtown Kennel Club as well.
She is a member of Hangtown Kennel Club, Borzoi Club of Northern California, Cascade Hound Association, Northwest Dog Show Judges Study Group, Inc. and Chintimini Kennel Club.
Mrs. Hillyard is now approved to judge Afghans, Basenjis, Borzoi, Irish Wolfhounds, Salukis, Whippets and Bearded Collies.
