Mary Ellen Compagnon has been breeding and exhibiting all three coats, both Standard and Miniature, Dachshunds under the prefix "No Ka Oi", since 1955. Mrs. Compagnon, along with her husband, Fred, has finished numerous champions.
Mary Ellen was instrumental in establishing the "dapple" Dachshund as an acceptable color variation in the breed. Through her conscientious efforts, "along with stalwart breeders of that era, the dapple Dachshund took its place as a competitor for the Variety, along with Group wins."
During the late 1950's and 1960's, she was a member of the Dachshund Club of Hawaii, Dachshund Club of California, and the Santa Ana Valley Kennel Club. While in Hawaii, she finished the first Longhaired Dachshund for the Islands by winning the Hound Group. In the 1970's-80's, she was a member of the Longview/Kelso Kennel Club; Dachshund Club of Greater Portland, in which she has held all the offices, including Show Chairman.
Mary Ellen began judging in 1970 and has received AKC approval to judge all Hounds, all Non-Sporting, Chihuahuas, Italian Greyhounds, Japanese Chin, Toy Poodles, Pugs and Best in Show. She feels she brings to the ring knowledge of structure, functional appreciation and knowledge of breeding programs, both in the Hound breeds and her Non-Sporting dogs, as well as an aesthetic appreciation of the dogs and their function. She has adjudicated many shows nationally and overseas and was the first to judge the Shiba Inu National Specialty.
