I started by showing a GSD in obedience and soon added Cardigans and Rottweilers in conformation and obedience. I began judging obedience in 1979 (have retired from obedience since then) and was approved to judge the two breeds in conformation in 1986. Have judged both of my Nationals, judged the Cardigan Annual Specialty in Great Britain, judged in Australia and do the entire Herding Group in the US. Have had the pleasure to judge many Rottweiler specialties and Cardigan supported entire as well as other Herding breed specialties. I'm very serious about specific, detailed type and about working soundness; but, as an obedience person, you bet I don't forget temperament. I'm not much impressed with statistics and judge each dog as it appears before me in the ring. I enjoy a well-handled dog (saves me time!), but do not particularly care who the handler is--or isn't. I am amused by puppies and do not expect dogs to behave like robots! I enjoy judging and hope that the exhibitors enjoy exhibiting also. (Tomorrow is always another day if one didn't win.) I really like judging Junior Showmanship and I try to help the youngsters understand how they could improve. I am looking for a team effort, where the junior gets back out of the way and shows off his/her dog, with a minimum of theatrics and intrusion. Yes, showing dogs is serious, but it is all about fun!
