Gay has been actively involved in the dog show world since 1949.

Author of numerous columns and regular articles for a variety of obedience and breed publications, Gay was senior author of the Howell Book House publication , The Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi, published in 1979. 

Gay has held a number of elected offices in a variety of obedience, all-breed and breed clubs and is now an Honorary Member of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America.

Since Gay's first official judging assignment at the 1965 PWCCA National Specialty, Gay has had a number of international assignments and has judged regular classes at three PWCCA National Specialties and one Cardigan National Specialty.
