Derek Rayne was born at Raynes Park, Surrey, England, and was educated at Kings College. He showed his first dog, an Airedale Terrier, at the age of eight. Since then he has owned 17 different breeds, but is best known for his Fox Terriers (Smooth and Wire) and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
He has been a prominent Corgi breeder for more than 50 years and has campaigned such well-known dogs as Eng. & Am. Ch. Rockrose of Wey, Ch. Nebriowa Miss Bobbisox and Ch. Elskling of Foxlore, winners of many Specialties and all-breed Bests in Show.
Mr. Rayne started his United States judging in 1939. He has been approved for all breeds since 1950, and was at one time the youngest all-beed judge in the world, as well as being approved to judge Obedience Trials. He has judged at shows in many overseas countries, including England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Cuba, Mexico, Sweden, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Denmark, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and Germany.
He resides in Carmel by the Sea, CA, with his wife, Gerda. He and his family owned and operated Derek Rayne, Ltd., a clothing business for men and women, for 53 years and retired same in 1995. He is an active member of both the Santa Barbara and Del Monte Kennel Clubs and is the only living charter member of the latter. He is currently the Honorary President of both. He is also a member of the Kennel Club of England. He won the Gaines Fido Award for Dog Judge of the year in 1956 and in 1975 won the Kennel Review Award as the Outstanding Judge of the Year.
Particularly memorable among his judging experiences have been assignments such as Best in Show at The Westminster Kennel Club in 1983, the Melbourne Royal in Australia in 1962 (where he judged 3600 dogs in nine days), and the Blackpool Championship Show in England in 1971, where he judged only the six Variety Groups and Best in Show ("a rare honor for a judge in those days"). Since then he has judged many more Groups and Bests in Show throughout the world. In a 1988 poll in "Canine Chronicle" he was voted number one judge in every group.
